Developing a Research Program in Intelligent Vehicle-Highway Systems

Intelligent Vehicle-Highway Systems (IVHS) improve the operation of cars and trucks on public roads by combining information technology with road transportation technologies. The basic ideas about IVHS are by no means new but a number of converging forces have encouraged significant IVHS development in North America recently. Based on the results of a Delphi survey to project realistic future scenarios, both applied and fundamental research agenda are being formulated in a Michigan-based IVHS program to push the IVHS technologies for advanced motorist information systems and for backup vehicle controls under emergency conditions. The scope of the research agenda includes social/human elements as well as hardware and software technological systems. The Michigan research program is expected to contribute to the development of IVHS in North America, both technically and institutionally.

Microprocessor Based Electrohydraulic Control For Car Haulers

Car hauler ramps have historically been hydraulically positioned via banks of manual control valves that provide limited operator visibility and flexibility. On some enclosed type haulers, manual valves are not feasible. An electro-hydraulic system has been developed utilizing on/off solenoid valve stacks. A handheld control unit with a membrane switch pad communicates with a valve interface module near each valve stack. The handheld unit and the interface modules each have microprocessor circuitry to provide intelligent distributed control. Self monitoring circuitry provides safety features and system diagnostics. Wiring harness assemblies connect the valve stacks to the interface modules. A retractile cable from the handheld unit to the trailer allows improved operator mobility and visibility. An infrared wireless interface between the trailer and handheld unit will also be available.

Evaluation of a Spark Plug by the Preignition Simulator

To evaluate the quality of a spark plug against the preignition, a new preignition simulator has been developed. The principle of this apparatus is to estimate the occurrence of preignition caused by a temperature rise in the electrode. The engine is operated with repeated stepwise shifting of spark timing by 55° CA advance from the MET condition. The number of advanced cycles is increased until the occurrence of real preignitions. By the number of advanced cycles when preignition occurs, the quality of the spark plug with respect to preignition can be evaluated. From this test result, it is confirmed that this preignition simulator is very useful for the practical application of experimental testing.

This paper reviews some of the methods and experience with the DRAM Program, as it has been developed for interactive simulation of realistic mechanical machinery. The Program has been made interactive by increasing solution speed and providing for output of a moving drawing of the mechanism on time shared graphic display terminals. At the same time program generality has been expanded by including effects such as Coulomb friction and impact.
